Jets players score a century

No, high scoring as they might be, the WPFC Under 14s Jets have yet to notch up a ton in a game. But players who make 100 appearances for the team can now become enrolled in the 100 Club and sport a limited edition silver ring. Indeed,  at the end of last season two players had made over 150 appearances and were the first to receive the ring and become the founding members of the 100 Club. They were, joined almost immediately by four more who had reached their century. Congratulations! Read the full story on the Jets' website .

Early silverware

Well done to our Under-15s Wanderers. They have picked up some silverware just a few matches into the season. The squad has been awarded the team of the month prize for October by the Comet newspaper. They won it on the basis of their 3-0 win over Bishops Stortford. Congratulations to players, manager and assistant, and supporters.

More news from our old boys

Last month we had a message from Damon in Canada, who played for WPFC in its early years. Now more memoirs have come our way from another of our old boys. Ian has cleared up the mystery of when and how we started playing in black and white. He also has some of those you-can-laugh-now-but-it-wasn't-funny-then memories of brave defeats. (If you missed Damon's message, you can read it on the Old News page)

I'm Ian Harvey. I played for WPFC from 1982 to1988. I was a pupil at Wlliam Ransom and joined the club with some of my school friends. There were just two teams at that time, the Under-10s and Under-12s.
I’ve read your website and I’m amazed how large the club has become but more so how successful it is. We were a team that loved playing but unfortunately every other team loved playing against us as every week we would get a drubbing. I remember our worst defeat was against Westmill who did us 24-0! Our top goal scorer was Andrew Imrie who bagged three goals in a season and we grabbed one solitary point over three seasons when we drew 1-1 with Purwell up at Little Wymondley - great days!
John Ferguson, John Fisher and Bret and Matt Washington's dad were the coaches when I joined and my dad – Terry - took over as manager of the Under-10s in my first season. I’m sure this had nothing to do with me becoming captain for most of my WPFC career! He used to put together some killer circuits for us on a thursday night at Bowes Lyon school [now Priory School], which he developed further when around 1986 we moved to Hitchin Town’s old training ground next to the main pitch. His efforts never came to fruition as we finished bottom every season. However his motivation and enthusiasm remained boundless. He would give half time team talks like he was managing a team in the World Cup final, only his faith was wasted on us muppets as we'd run around like headless chickens but nevertheless enjoying our footy!
The club was always keen on trips and I remember in 1981, just before I joined, I was invited to a tour round Wembley stadium. In December 1982 we went to Tottenham vs Southampton and in ‘83 we went to watch Watford and even got on Match of the Day. They did a piece on Watford’s family enclosure and as the cameras passed in front of it we all bundled to the front waving and shouting. I believe that’s the only time WPFC made it on the big screen!
I’m in the 1984 photo taken on ransoms rec [see photos from the archives page]. I’m the good looking one in the Spurs kit. To the left of me is Dominic Buck (his brother Kevin was our ‘keeper and I’m sure the experience still haunts him!). Then there’s Andrew Collitt, not sure who the next bloke is but Mark Ferguson is on the left. The front row from the left is Simon Lovewell, Paul ferguson and Andrew Still. Andrew’s dad -John - later joined the coaching staff.
Other people I recognise in the photos are Simon Deacon, Derek Fisher, David Ferris, Stuart Finch, David Waldock and Mark Finch.
I think in 1985 Andrew Collit’s dad, who ran Randalls butchers in Ninesprings, sponsored the team and we finally binned the yellow strip and got a white shirt with black shorts strip.
I have a load of old pics which I will try to dig out and send over to you. It’s great to know WPFC is still going!

Canada calling

WPFC's friends are spread far and wide. We have just received a letter from a former player now living in Canada, saying how pleased he is that the club is still thriving.  Next thing you know and we'll have an overseas supporters group! We are publishing the letter below so current players can see that the games they play now will stay with them for many years to come, as will the friendships they make being part of a club that is part of Hitchin's community and history. Read on:

Well it’s great to see the WPFC is still going. My brother and I used to play for the teams in the early ‘80s - Damon and Jason West. My brother has photos which he will be forwarding. He was captain for the Under-12s and I might have been for a younger team. My memory is vague but I do remember having a great time playing, apart from those cold mornings changing in the locker room.
I was the captain for William Ransom School in the ‘80s also and have fond memories there especially the captain’s report on a Monday mornings’ assembly in front of the school..
So, coaches I remember were, of course, Jon Ferguson who still lives up the same street as my parents - a great coach and guy who drove us to games and practice at Bowes Lyon. His wife Margaret, a lovely lady, drove us too. Their sons Mark and Paul played too, Mark still being a very close friend.
Ian Harvey’s dad also coached but sadly he passed away a few years ago and I remember a Jon Fisher, I think, coaching too.
Wow, what a team we had. Names I remember are: Mark and Paul Ferguson, Brett and Matt Washington, Simon Cowling - not sure whether his brother Ian played - Phillip Dawe, Stuart Finch, Andrew Imrie, Andrew Collett, Jon Skinner (he was a great footballer and I think he went into football training or something) Simon Lovewell,  Fisher (can’t remember first name but he was  the coach’s son). Many names I can’t remember. I think all of these guys went to William Ransom as well.Unfortunately I don’t get to see these guys much now after I moved to Canada but I will forward this email to Simon Cowling, Mark Ferguson, Ian Harvey and my brother, who are still very close friends.
Hope some of this info has helped. All the best from a true Wymondley Park footballer.
Damon West

Shefford Tournament - No silverware but a great performance

WPFC teams left the Shefford Tournament without any winners cups this year but once again the club put in a great performance. Both the Under-11s and the Under-13s were narrowly beaten having fought their way to the finals. The Under-9s only failed to get to the semi finals on goal difference and the Under-15s also were unlucky not to progress beyond the group stage. The teams drew praise and admiration from supporters of other clubs and, be sure, we'll be back next year!

Blast from the past

We are delighted to have been contacted by two members of the very first WPFC teams from the early 1980s. Matt and Brett Washington say how pleased they are to hear their old club is thriving - one of them even found himself pictured in a shot on the photo archive page. Then even more than now Wymondley was a family club - youngsters playing, one parent as treasurer and the other coaching. Their message includes some information on the very early days of the club, which has been included on the history page on this site. For example, the name Wymondley Park along with a club logo were chosen by a vote by the players. If you haven't looked at the history page yet, click on it and have a read. And if you or anyone else can add to it, get in touch.

May 2008

Under-11s complete a great season for                                                      Wymondley Park

The Under-11s put the icing on the WPFC cake this season winning their championship playoff against Fairlands on neutral turf at Royston. The vile weather on Sunday (May 25th) contrasted with the skill and determination of both teams. One early goal and a penalty kick late on sealed the 2-0 winCWW. The Under-11s end the season with a trophy just as they started the pre-season when they won their age group's cup at the Shefford tournament. Many, many congratulations to the boys and to Mick and John for their hard work and belief.
This victory completes a highly successful season for Wymondley Park FC. The Under-11s and Under-15s are promoted as champions, the Under-12s as runners up and both Under-10s teams topped their groups so they will start eleven-a-side matches high up in the pecking order. Well done to all our teams and coaches.

Under-10s do the business

trophyWPFC proved again this season what a great training ground it provides for young footballers and what a fantastic pipeline of players it has. Both Under-10s teams topped their groups. Whether they combine or go on to form two 11-a-side squads next season, they are likely to start off in the top division of the Royston Crow League.
The 'A' team finished 13 points clear of their group and the 'B' team 12 points clear. Well done to the players, managers and supporters.

Under-15s and Under-12s going up!

Congratulations to WPFC Under-15s and Under-12s, both being promoted after highly successful seasons.
The Under-15s, managed by Winston Moulton, are promoted as champions of division three in their first season playing together. A win at Pin Green on April 27 put them above Stotfold to take the crown. The success is all the greater because the team only came together pre-season, comprising two players from the previous season's Under-14s team that disbanded, some players from WPFC Wanderers and a host of players new to the club.
In the League Cup it took Stevenage Town, the top team in division one to knock them out.

The WPFC Under-12s, one of three under-12s teams playing for the club in the season, move to the top division after coming in second, a placing confirmed when they beat third placed Bishop's Stortford 4-3 on April 27. The team, managed by Steve Dawson, Peter Dean and David Mee was promoted last year too.
The team had a good run in the league cup as well, only being knocked out in the semi-final by first division Knebworth.

April 2008

Bums on seats

Several dozen people turned up to Lucas Lane on April 10 to find out more about the club committee posts that need filling. We also had expressions of interest arrive via this website. This was very encouraging because, as you know, these posts must be filled for the club to register for next season. More than two hundred players depend on their supporters getting their act together! The club committee is due to meet on April 24 to allocate the posts and names will be announced shortly afterwards.
But don't let this success hold you back from volunteering. There is no reason why we can't have extra bodies on the committee and there is plenty of room for people to run or assist with projects to raise funds, organise events or whatever.

No subs? No game!

If you haven't paid your subs for the season, you MUST do so immediately. See your manager at the very next training session or match. Your club depends on subscriptions. In fact, local football from youth teams to pub teams depends on players paying up on time. Players who do not pay cannot play. And it's not just WPFC that won't let you play. Herts FA circulates a list of non-payers and they are barred from all clubs. Anyone with difficulty finding the money should speak to a manager or committee member in confidence.

Save our pitches!

The pitches at Lucas Lane are under threat from developers. We are very lucky to have such good pitches and ones that are well maintained. Think of some those awful cow fields you've suffered at away games! Local residents, who value the wonderful views from Lucas Lane, have set up an action group to persuade the council not to build there. However, on March 13, managers and committee members of the club were told WPFC could gain from the development. The Cricket Club, which controls the land and supports the development, says that the housing would be built on the two lower pitches (the full size one and the mini pitch) but they would be replaced by new pitches on the remaining land. Moreover, there is talk of creating an all-weather pitch where the top pitch is currently located and the possibility of access to new changing room facilities. Watch out for more developments. This issue is vital to the club.
